Support The Campaign For The Farmed Environment

The Campaign for the Farmed Environment commenced in November. This campaign is a joint initiative between the CLA, NFU, RSPB and others and aims to retain and exceed the environmental benefits provided by land that was formerly in set-aside.

This voluntary approach has been approved by DEFRA following a successful campaign aimed at providing an industry led solution to mitigating the loss of the environmental benefits provided by set aside.

Farmers are being encouraged to:

1. Enter ELS, if they are not already in ELS
2. Leave land uncropped where possible to replicate the effects of set aside
3. Enter enhanced management options, from a specific list, where farmers are unwilling to enter ELS

Whilst there is no compulsion to support the campaign, industry-wide support will be crucial in helping to ensure that the Government doesn’t legislate to impose environmental measures on farmers in order to mitigate the loss of set aside.
