Thornton Manor was built in 1805, replacing an earlier manor house which was described in 1780 as a 'very ancient structure'. The discovery of discarded oyster shells suggest it may have been a site of habitation as far back as Roman times. The new manor house incorporated a number of older features, probably brought from the ruins of its predecessor and the carved heads of corn in the hall portray its long agricultural association with the Crown Estate, who sold it in 1967.
