The Countryside Stewardship Scheme, which provides funding to farmers and landowners for implementing measures which protect and enhance the environment, has just opened for applications in 2021.

What is the countryside stewardship scheme?

The Countryside Stewardship Scheme is an agri-environment scheme which provides funding to farmers who carry out certain works to improve and protect the environment.

What are the different types of Countryside Stewardship funding?

You can currently apply for:

  • Mid Tier – choose from all available multi-year options and capital items to form an agreement which delivers local environmental benefits
  • Higher Tier – more complex agreements for land in environmentally sensitive sites, commons or woodlands which requires support from Natural England or the Forestry Commission
  • Capital Grants Manual – now includes 67 capital items covering boundaries, trees, orchards and hedgerows
  • Woodland Tree Health Manual and Woodland Management Plan or Woodland Creation and Maintenance Manual – support for new or improved woodland and forestry

When do applications close for the Countryside Stewardship 2021 scheme?

The application window for both Higher Tier and Capital Grants closes on the 30th April and for Mid-Tier applications the window closes on the 30th July.

Countryside Stewardship will eventually be replaced with Environmental Land Management schemes (ELMs), which is to be fully rolled out in 2024.
