Carter Jonas News 2022

In June, the Planning & Development division hosted the first of many learning lunches which will consist of both internal and external experts sharing their knowledge over teams, to ensure people are up to date with the latest topics within the industry.

Associate Partner, Christopher Cooper, kickstarted the learning lunches on 20 June discussing Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL). The webinar was targeted towards those who have been dealing with CIL for a while now and wanted a reminder about its impact, but also those who are relatively new to the subject or indeed the business and want to understand a bit more about its inner workings.

Chris covered the topic in depth, focussing on CIL regulations and how to add value to the advice given to clients, taking through the principles of the calculation itself, touching on matters such as including indexation, its relationship with full, outline, phased and non-phased permissions, procedural matters, and highlighting the pitfalls of non-compliance through real-life examples.

If you would like to host a learning lunch, please get in touch with Emma.Joaglowski@carterjonas.co.uk to discuss further.

Carter Jonas has obtained planning permission on behalf of Powerleague Group Ltd for the installation of seven padel tennis courts, a new clubhouse, office and physio buildings, at its existing site adjacent to Shoreditch Overground Station, London.

The proposals will provide enhanced leisure facilities on this site, complementing the existing football pitches, and making available the new courts to the local community.

Helena Jenkinson joined the Bristol Planning and Development team for a 4-week real world ‘Agency Project’ as part of her undergraduate degree in Architecture and Planning at the University of West England.

The Agency Project is a final year elective module for both AP and Planning students to given them real world experience delivering a project at a firm which adds value to the business. Helena combined her skills in visual presentation, analytical skills and policy to research and deliver a Vision Statement for a site in Wareham which is promoted for allocation by Welbeck Land.

The Vision Statement looked at site opportunities and constraints, housing need, design and the need for a Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG) to relieve recreational pressure created by the proposed site.

She was coached through the project by the Bristol and Oxford planning team as well as the Masterplanning team to ensure accuracy and to improve on her already impressive skill set. The Vision Statement as well as a reflective practice essay has been submitted to her tutor for formal assessment. The document will now be used to demonstrate to the local authority that the proposed development site is suitable for development and that it should be allocated in the emerging Dorset Local Plan.

Story of the month

Raphaela Bilson joined Carter Jonas for a week’s work experience and shared her thoughts with us

I am a first year sixth form student from Langley Park School for Boys and I applied directly to Carter Jonas for work experience lasting one week, when offered a place at Carter Jonas, Chapel Place and gladly accepted it. From entering the main building reception to Carter Jonas' own reception, friendly faces make sure you're okay and have everything and anything you need to ensure a comfortable stay.

Just one week at Carter Jonas has opened my eyes to a wide range of ventures and meticulous planning I had never thought about until coming. I was put with the Planning and Development team who - as well as many other members of staff - were extremely welcoming and generous, taking time to introduce themselves and engage in thought-provoking as well as casual conversations which I sincerely appreciate

Myself and two candidates were allowed to listen in on meetings discussing ongoing projects and were given tasks to complete during the week, which personally, really helped me to put new knowledge into perspective and apply it to the tasks I was given. This also really help me to boost my confidence in the work environment as we were able to help collect information about a new potential site which was rather exciting. I also had the opportunity to visit a site and see first-hand the main characteristics that are examined upon inspection.

I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to work for Carter Jonas, Chapel Place, and their continuous drive to make sure everyone on the team is included whether you are an actual staff member or not.

The next edition of Planning & Development Bulletin will be published in July, however you can keep up-to-date with our latest firmwide developments on the News & Events section of our website.

Nick is a chartered town planner and development surveyor with over 25 years' experience, gained across the residential, commercial, retail and industrial sectors for corporate, institutional and private landowners and developers. He has worked at CBRE and Drivers Jonas Deloitte. His professional experience is in three main sectors – Strategic Land / Projects, Retail / Mixed-Use and Central London. Strategic Projects / Land involves the promotion of land for commercial and residential development for landowners and developers. Retail / Mixed-Use schemes are a blend of edge of centre and town centre mixed-use schemes with food stores and other uses, often residential. This sector includes regeneration and waterside schemes. Central London focuses on projects from Canary Wharf to Hammersmith and Camden down to Wandsworth, Southwark and Lambeth. When he isn’t working, Nick can be found playing golf (increasingly badly) and spending time re-stocking and emptying his wine cellar to indulge his passion for wine.
