Alexander lays down new vintage in skills

Alexander Terry, who has joined Carter Jonas in Cambridge as a graduate trainee surveyor, has brought a completely new skill – advising on vineyards - to the firm.

The 24 year old completed the dissertation for his Masters in estate management at the Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester.

He is now working towards membership of the RICS and taking the APC in two years but as one of the first UK students to complete a masters dissertation on vineyards he is also looking to develop vineyard valuation skills.

Alexander’s taste for studying the grape developed while he worked as a freelance

wine waiter at high end events for a couple of years while completing his geography degree at King’s College, London.

He concentrated his studies on English wine from the south east, one of the best regions of the UK, and arranged half a dozen vineyard interviews from Sussex to Norfolk. Many may think that vineyards are a specialism of the South Downs but East Anglia has more than 30 vineyards, two of them within five miles of his home in Clare, Suffolk.

The main focus of Alexander’s dissertation was the viability of vineyards as a diversification project on farms, studying vineyards ranging from one to 300 acres.
