Projects at Worcester College, Oxford

In line with other Oxford Colleges, Worcester aims to provide its own accommodation for all under graduate and post graduate students. This required a major construction programme to provide new and refurbished study bedrooms and associated facilities. The accommodation also had to be suitable for conference use out of term time. Carter Jonas acted as employer’s agent, guiding the College through a series of design & build contracts.

The works included:

  • The Earl Building
  • A new building providing 50 en suite study bedrooms clustered around shared kitchens. The latter are large enough to act as social gathering places, as well as cooking and dining. The project also included a new gymnasium and a laundry.

  • Gloucester House
  • Conversion of an existing building to provide 19 en suite study bedrooms grouped around generous kitchens.

  • Richmond Road
Conversion of three Victorian terraced houses to provide a total of 17 en suite study bedrooms.

  • Ruskin Lane Building
  • A new building providing 32 en suite study bedrooms grouped around shared kitchens. This building also included multi-purpose teaching/conference rooms and a fully equipped catering kitchen.

  • Worcester Place
Major refurbishment and extensions to Victorian properties providing a total of 44 en suite study bedrooms.

  • The Casson & Wolfson Buildings
  • Major refurbishment of these 1960s & 70s buildings providing a total of 55 en suite study bedrooms and associated facilities.

These projects were all undertaken within the beautiful College grounds, surrounded by fine Listed buildings and working during term time. Carter Jonas also acted as special advisor to the Provost during the refurbishment and extension of a group of important Listed Georgian houses in Beaumont Street.
