Renewal of roof covering and services at Worcester College Library
Worcester College, University of Oxford
The mineral felt roof covering over the Worcester College reference library, added in 1980 to the Grade I listed main library, had reached the end of its life and had become hazardous to access.
Leaks were occurring in adjacent lead and slate roofs, concealed building services required renewal, and the lightning protection system was outdated. The college bell had also been out of operation for more than 20 years.
Carter Jonas secured pre application advice from the Conservation Officer, developed design solutions to improve roof access, added insulation, replaced rooflights, upgraded building services, and improved lightning protection. Planning and listed building consent were obtained, followed by full specification, tender management, and contract administration through to completion.
Significant on site challenges were overcome, including splice repairs to the decayed timber bell housing and designing raised metal feet to protect the structure above the new roof covering. Extensive coordination ensured work progressed despite restricted access routes, strict insurer hot works policies, and ongoing college activities such as open days and weddings. Contractors worked flexibly, including weekends and extended hours, to meet the weather dependent programme and the college’s fixed completion deadline.
