16 December 2015, Planning permission is being sought to secure the expansion of specialist Leeds-based medical products company Xiros Ltd and support the creation of 30 or more new jobs.

The planning division of national property consultant Carter Jonas working with architectural practice Wilson Kennett Partnership – both of Harrogate - has submitted plans to extend Xiros’ headquarters at Springfield House, adjacent to Leeds Bradford Airport, on behalf of the company.

The proposed development at Whitehouse Lane, designed by Wilson Kennett Partnership, is for a sympathetic extension to Springfield House to provide enlarged office, manufacturing and storage space on part of the existing lawn and car parking areas.

Established in 1984, Xiros designs and manufactures devices for the repair and reconstruction of ruptured ligaments and tendons in individuals who have suffered trauma, for example in road traffic accidents, or athletes who have sustained injuries whilst playing sport. The company also specialises in the development and manufacture of medical products for international orthopaedic companies. Xiros exports 95% of its products globally, particularly to America, Japan and South Africa. In 2008 the business won the Queen's Award for Enterprise in the International Trade Category.

Xiros has previously been placed third in the Sunday Times Best Small Companies to Work For competition, as well as winning a Sunday Times Best Companies Award (3 Stars “Extraordinary” Award). The company has also won a number of awards for its Environmental and Biodiversity initiatives.

Roland Henney, a Xiros Director, said: “Xiros is a highly-specialised business and a great success story for Yorkshire. The success of our products over the past decade means that we now need more space to enable us to continue to develop innovative solutions for individuals with debilitating injuries. Our position close to the airport enables good connectivity to national and international locations and is critical to the continuation and growth of the business. The proposed extension would enable us to add to our number of highly-skilled staff, many of whom live locally, whilst continuing to work in our uniquely team-focused way. As a result we expect to create more than 30 additional jobs which would be a significant benefit to the local economy.”

Emma Winter, senior planner at Carter Jonas, said: “We are pleased to submit planning proposals from Wilson Kennett Partnership on behalf of Xiros in its bid for expansion. The company’s plans are in line with the Local Development Framework for the City which has a focus on attracting more research and development companies like Xiros. The proposed plans have the full support of the local MP who has visited the facilities.”

Carter Jonas has boosted its planning service across the country in the last year with the acquisition of Planning Perspectives LLP. The company now boasts 75 chartered planners and surveyors in Harrogate, Leeds, London, Oxford and Cambridge. Wilson Kennett Partnership is a long-established Harrogate-based RIBA chartered and CIAT registered architectural practice.
