Work has begun on the construction of a new retail village on Stuntney Estate, Ely, Cambridgeshire.

The Stuntney Estate is farmed by Alastair and Victoria Morbey, who received planning permission for the village, Ben's Yard – named in honour of a valued and adored historic member of the farm - in mid-2020.

Located just one mile from Ely off the A142, Ben’s Yard will comprise over 20,000 sq. ft. of retail space across 13 boutiques and a café/restaurant complete with an adventure playground and dedicated event space, set on 10 acres of fully landscaped grounds within the wider estate.

Slated to open in spring 2023, Ben’s Yard will champion local businesses and great British brands. There are opportunities for specialist food and beverage occupiers, including a food hall, butchery, bakery and delicatessen, as well as womenswear, accessories, country pursuits, homeware, interior and beauty retailers and local arts and crafts.

The units, which are being built in a modern New England style architecture, range in size from 496 sq. ft. (46 sq. m.) to 1,438 sq. ft. (134 sq. m.). Subject to planning, they can be adapted to create larger single spaces. National property consultancy Carter Jonas is appointed as retained leasing agent for the scheme.

Victoria Morbey of Ben’s Yard Retail Village said: “As a family business, we pride ourselves on our inclusivity and attention to detail. Ben’s Yard will offer businesses from near and far, the opportunity to be part of this exciting project, within a rapidly developing demographic, on a historic estate at the centre of this community. Our priority is our relationship with our tenants so that they feel truly supported and nurtured, and together we can offer the very best products and services to our guests to ensure that every visit is an enriching experience.”

Ben Le Coq, Associate Partner, National Commercial Development, Carter Jonas, said: “The beginning of construction is an exciting step towards realising the vision of Ben’s Yard - creating a dynamic new retail and leisure destination for the local community and the thousands of visitors that come to the area each year, whilst helping to support the long-term vibrancy of Ely. The additional planned attractions, including wildflower trails, a reservoir, an adventure playground and a host of events, will provide additional reasons for visitors to come again and again, helping ensure good levels of footfall throughout the year. We are currently speaking to several retailers attracted to the development and encourage anyone interested in taking space to get in touch.”
