Carter Jonas has been appointed by U+I, the specialist regeneration developer and investor, as the lead planning consultant on Cambridge Northern Fringe East (“CNFE”).

The 120-acre site will be transformed into a major new city quarter and is expected to deliver around 5,200 homes and up to one million sq ft of commercial, retail and leisure space that could create more than 7,000 jobs.

The majority of the site is currently occupied by Anglian Water’s wastewater recycling centre, which will be relocated if an application for around £200m from the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund is approved.

Cambridge City Council and Anglian Water selected U+I as the master developer in July 2018 following a formal procurement process. The catalyst for the regeneration is the new Cambridge North railway station, which opened in May 2017.

Richard Seamark, Partner, Carter Jonas said: “Cambridge Northern Fringe East is one of the most significant brownfield regeneration projects in the UK. It will help to meet the chronic undersupply of homes in Cambridge and provide new retail, community and leisure space that will boost economic growth and enable this new city quarter to thrive. We look forward to working closely with U+I to deliver this important scheme, as they have built an unrivalled reputation in delivering complex placemaking projects.”
