Carter Jonas were commissioned by Hertfordshire County Council to carry out a condition survey of the Bishop’s Stortford Young People’s Centre.

The roof of the building had a complicated layout of flat and pitched roofs with much of the structure not visible from the ground. To carry out the roof survey it would have been necessary to erect scaffolding around the building or use a MEWP to gain access. This approach would have been costly and brings additional risk due to the requirement for personnel to work at height.

The Measured Survey team proposed the use of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to carry out the survey. The UAV offers a number of advantages as it can be mobilised quickly, can access areas not visible from the ground and allows rapid data collection.

High resolution 4k imagery was collected using the UAV. The imagery was geolocated and presented as an overlay within Google Earth. The client was able to view the position and orientation of each image and also zoom to individual images to allow detailed examination of any defects. The imagery can be shared between any number of users.

Site works were completed within a couple of hours with the data delivered to the client the following day.
