Farms throughout southern England with straw and hay for sale count on the auction system to achieve the best price for their product.

Over the past 50 years we have established a national reputation for our fodder auctions, notably the Newbury Hay & Straw Sale, which attracts buyers from all over the country. Over 5,000 tonnes are regularly traded each season, including meadow and seed hay, wheat, barley and oat straw.

We normally hold sales each December, January and March, with product sold from farms located across southern England. Carter Jonas can also arrange private sales.

Newbury Hay and Straw Sale - 1st March 2018

With snow on the ground in Newbury and many parts of the country a smaller number of buyers attended the March sale, but the exceptional trade for straw remained.

Barley straw averaged £105 per tonne with the top price of £32 per bale for 80 x 90 bales going to regular vendor Rob Snook of Urchfont, Devizes.  Wheat straw averaged £100 per tonne with a top price of £23.50 per bale for 80 x 70 bales achieved for Mark Weinfeld of Bishops Waltham, Winchester.

The hay trade was generally buoyant with good quality product in demand from local buyers and those further afield including Wales.  A top price equivalent to £160 per tonne was achieved for meadow hay with an overall average of £115 per tonne reflecting the varying quality.  A few lots were unsold and are available along with a quantity of haylage not entered in the sale.
