I decided to study Building Surveying because I’ve always had a interest in buildings—especially historic ones. I’ve always enjoyed having a look around and understanding how they’re put together. The degree was a great introduction to the surveying industry and after graduating I went straight into a surveying role.

We are excited to share the latest updates from the world of Carter Jonas. In this edition, you’ll find highlights from our recent expansions, team developments and divisional milestones.
In July, we marked one year since opening our Manchester office, an important step in our North West expansion. Over the past year, Harry Bolton and his team have welcomed several new colleagues. Most recently, Sophie Cragg joined as a Planner after completing her studies and earning her APC qualification and a postgraduate degree in Urban and Regional Planning, and Will Hughes joined as an Associate Partner in the Commercial team.
In August, we implemented a strategic reorganisation of our Planning and Development division to support our five-year growth plan, Vision 2030. Under the leadership of Colin Brown, four new national business units have been introduced:
- Planning Consultancy - led by Katy Davis
- Development Consultancy - led by Jon Pinkerton
- Development Agency - led by James Cordery
- Masterplanning & Urban Design - led by Jonny Clayton.
This new structure helps us work better together, deliver services more effectively and improve how we operate across the UK.
Earlier this month, we shared news about our Birmingham team moving to a new office and our expansion in Nottingham. In Birmingham, more than 100 team members have moved to 81 Colmore Row, a newly refurbished space built for collaboration and flexible working. We are also growing our Nottingham office at Cubo, Standard Court, to support our Infrastructure and Energy business. These changes show our ongoing commitment to Vision 2030 and our focus on sustainable growth, adaptability and excellent client service.
Thank you for joining us in celebrating these milestones!

September APC event: a warm welcome to 2026 intake
This September, we proudly hosted our bi-annual APC event, welcoming our graduate, apprenticeship, and placement students to a vibrant two-day programme of learning and professional development.
Held in Nottingham, the event brought together 112 graduates, including 53 new starters. It was a fantastic opportunity for our early careers community to connect, collaborate, and build the skills and confidence needed for their APC assessment and to thrive in their roles.
The agenda was packed with interactive sessions, networking opportunities, and insights from across the business—designed to help our new joiners hit the ground running and support the continued growth of our returning graduates. We’re already looking ahead to the Spring 2026 APC event, where we’ll be welcoming our graduates back for the next stage of their development journey.
Interview with Anna Gray, Graduate Surveyor - Building Consultancy
When I was researching Carter Jonas, I recognised it as a well-established firm with a friendly and supportive culture. I liked that it’s big enough to offer a wide range of projects and learning opportunities but not so large that you feel like just another number.
The culture at Carter Jonas is really welcoming and inclusive. There were plenty of opportunities to get involved, from sports events to curry nights and networking socials. It’s a great way to meet people from different teams and feel part of the company, both at work and outside of it.
My favourite thing about the team was how approachable everyone was, and they were always happy to explain things or walk me through something new.
One interesting (and unexpected) thing I’ve learned since joining Carter Jonas is how some modern crematoriums use the heat generated during cremation to help warm the building. It’s a surprising example of energy efficiency, even if it’s a bit unusual.
My advice would be to get as much hands-on experience as you can, whether that’s through placements, shadowing, or even working on a construction site if you're going into building surveying. The property sector is broad, so take the time to explore different roles and find out what interests you most. If you study surveying, you’ll find that many of the skills are transferable making it easier to move between different areas as your career develops.
I’ve been lucky to work on a range of exciting projects but one highlight was being involved in a Grade II Listed building survey for a property valued at over £10 million. I’ve also enjoyed taking on more project management responsibilities, particularly when working on repairs to Grade II Listed buildings.
