Retail and Town Centres Masterplanning and Urban Design Planning Consultancy

Great Yarmouth started life as a Roman port, was a large and important town in medieval times, and has the largest ancient marketplace in the UK. However, in common with many English fishing ports and seaside towns, in recent decades it has faced severe economic challenges.

Sutton Griffin’s masterplanners and Carter Jonas’ town centre team were appointed alongside WSP and Fabrik to undertake a comprehensive 4-year regeneration plan for the town centre from the River Yare in the west to the seafront in the east, and from the station in the north to the St. Georges cultural quarter in the south. The study produced an integrated physical and economic renewal plan which introduced a new station gateway, rethought the market place, improved town centre linkage, and introduced new strategies for parking, signage and street furniture.

Particular emphasis was placed on attracting new visitors to the town centre which would help to renew the economy as well as renovate the town’s superb stock of historic buildings.

A comprehensive public consultation strategy was undertaken to secure local support for the proposals.
